economy. looking at live pictures from the united nations general assembly. we have already seen protests in the street outside of the u.n. over his very appearance. we'll take that live when it begins. >>> the topic ahmadinejad could weigh in on today is palestinian statehood as well. it is a proposal we are expecting to hear tomorrow when the palestinian leader mahmoud abbas addresses the united nations. so how do you have a state without borders, right? our fionnuala will take a look at finding those dividing lines in jerusalem. >> reporter: more than 0 years ago the late yasser arafat declared a palestinian state. it didn't happen. so why is israel worried now? well, precisely because of places like this. this settlement on the 1967 borders and juxtapositions between jerusalem to my left and ramallah behind me, just some ten miles apart. this hill top has been the site of many a strategic battle between israel and arab nations. prize -- jerusalem. today a different kind of battle is being played out in the valleys below. the separation barrier divides israeli from palestinian literall

another story -- 193 nations meeting today at the united nations general assembly in new york. but there is one -- one speaker, that's set to take the stage and is certain to spark a bit of controversy. with gadhafi gone perhaps the most controversial figure at this week's united nations general assembly meeting is now iran's president, mahmoud ahmadinejad. he's set to take stage at the u.n., a platform he's used before to spark both outrage and fear. in 2006, he famously denied the holocaust. at colombia university in 2007, he claimed there were in gays in iran. in 2009 he denied the holocaust again causing many u.n. delegates to walk out. and last year, ahmadinejad implied 9/11 could have been an inside job by the united states. but beyond ahmadinejad's words, iran's actions matter to the u.s. because iran proves itself, time and time again, to be a dang dangerous wild card in a volatile region. just in the past year, iran resisted the arab spring, launching attacks on protesters. it was reminiscent of the violent response to iran's green revolution in 2009 when iranians cam

ahmadinejad appearance before the united nations general assembly. it would seem that iran's dealer ins are trying to court favorable public opinion and try to blunt the inevitable criticism they are going to face at the u.n. about the nuclear program and their human rights record. so, that is probably the reason for the timing of the release. now, we do know from the lawyer for the two men that the bail money or ransom money as some called it wasaid, again, bioman, itself. the reason for that is unclear. ohman is, obviously, a long term and important u.s. ally but why they would hand over $1 million is not yet clear. clearly there probably is some quid pro quo in terms of u.s. support and backing for ohman. >>shepard: we don't know what this is all about, in essence? >>jonathan: we don't know the reason for them paying $1 million. they have not acknowledged it. that is what we hear from the lawyers involved in the case and what we understood happened with the release of sarah shourd last year at $500,000. but, there are reasons that remain unknown. >>shepard: president obama saying the

nations general assembly this morning. he will follow back up with meetings with israeli and palestinian leaders. the u.s. says it will veto the move in the u.n. security council. >>> still no word on why an unidentified man jumped a fence outside the white house last night. it happened about 6:30 on pennsylvania avenue near lafayette park. the secret service says the man was carrying a backpack, but there was nothing dangerous inside. he faces unlawful entry charges. the first family was not home during the incident. >>> 6:32. a murdered bowie state university will be remembered at a vigil tonight. >> the service will allow the university community to celebrate dominique frazier's life. prosecutors say that her roommate's alexis simpson stabbed her to death after they argued over music plank from ipod. -- music playing. >>> the oldest daughter of massachusetts senator ted kennedy has died. she died at a north west d.c. health club at the age of 51. >>> a funeral mass will be held at 9:30 this morning at holy trinity church in georgetown. there will be a private burial. >>> two prince ge

of palestinian statehood could be front and center on the agenda at the united nations general assembly this week. palestinian president mahmoud abbas expected to apply to the u.n. for statehood status as early as tomorrow. it will go to the u.n. security council, and that is where the united states has threatened to veto the move because of concerns it would derail the u.s.-backed middle east peace process and the talks with israel. >> already diminished american credibility is going to be diminished further. there's no question about that. we are neither admired, feared, nor respected in this region. >> israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu said the palestinian plan to get in the u.n. won't work. he made the statement in a cabinet meeting this morning. both netanyahu and abbas scheduled to speak to the general assembly on friday. the president speaks to the u.n. on wednesday. >>> by now, you may know the name, troy davis. he is a death row inmate who many people is about to be executed, but he's innocent. he's facing his execution on wednesday after killing a police officer back in 1989. bu

speakers making a stand on the world stage this week at the 66th united nations general assembly taking place in new york. everything from the teetering global markets, the future of libya, famine in so somalia. all those things are on the table. after a year of seismic, big decisions, it's the power plays happening behind closed doors that are making a difference. president obama is meeting privately with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu to talk about the road to peace. the potential for a palestinian state. the president's also going to meet with the palestinian leader, mahmoud abbas, separately, that's happening later today. abbas expected to demand statehood this friday in front of the general assembly. that would be a huge change to the face of the region. something neither united states or israel wants to see happen without having a hand in the negotiations. the president made his own address to the general assembly about that this morning. >> i know that many are frustrated by the lack of progress. i say sure you, so am i. but the question isn't the goal that we seek, th

. if there was just a vote -- just needed for a vote in the united nations general assembly, it would overwhelmingly be approved very quickly. to get that full membership as a member state of the united states, you need the security council to approve it. you need nine states, nine members of the u.n. security council, 15 members all together that are ready to support it. you also have to avoid a veto by one of the five permanent members of the u.n. security council. president obama says the u.s. will use that veto. the security council isn't going to authorize full membership for the palestinians but they're trying to avoid that veto if at all possible. >> it seems to me the president has to -- talking about president obama -- he's walking a bit of a fine line here. really, i know you can speak to this, this isn't just a diplomatic issue but this is a domestic issue as well. we have the jewish vote at stake here for president obama and what happened in new york with the election for anthony weiner's seat which had been vacated. what do you make of that? >> well, it's become a huge political issue.

leaderers are gathering in new york city for the annual opening of the united nations general assembly. the palestinians' bid for full membership is expected to dominate the meetings. the united nations all 193 nations, are representeded in the general assembly. you can consider the general assembly really the main policy making body of the u.n., like our congress. but each country, rich or poor, small or large, gets equal representation. one vote. a full range of international issues is on the table, including historic talks today on diseases such as hiv, diabetes and cancer. but the big question weighing over this session is whether the u.n. will recognize palestine as a state. let's go straight to our senior state department producer elise labott. we understand that the u.n. secretary-general and the palestinian president mahmoud abbas met today. do you have any details about the meeting? >> we're hearing from the palestinians and from the united nations president abbas told ban ki-moon he's making good on his promise to go to the u.n. security council later this week to apply for f

the world at the united nations general assembly. there is a lot on the line. iranian leader's tone will be very telling because his grip on power is shaky these days. many observers believe he needs to ease tensions with the united states. let's go first to the political prisoner in the united states thing. what do you suppose that means? >> i was than aware there were a lot of iranians in the mountains picked up -- >> but iranians in jail in different capacities over the years iranians asked for a quid pro quo release. we have to see until the american hikers are back on u.s. soil to see just what these statements really mean. whether it is political niceties to thank oman and reflect on their experiences in iran, until they come back, probably they will be on the set and you can ask them. but as for the hikers' situation it also played out this drama at the united nations, you can't mistake the timing. president obama, president ahmadinejad, different areas of the u.n. while president obama was speaking, president ahmadinejad came in through the u.n. entrance. here he is leaving

is that as ahmadinejad comes to the united nations' general assembly next week or so, that he will have something positive to ride on. >> sources within iran's government tell nbc news the release is expected, still expected within the next coming days. the story is on the front page of the impending release of every newspaper in iran. and in some of the newspapers, the hikers are being called spies, and the question is being asked, why would iran release them now? matt, back to you. >> it's a tough story to follow. we thank you for your reporting on that and appreciate it very much. it's now six minutes after the hour. here's savannah. >>> now to politics and the renewed firestorm over a controversial vaccine. during monday's republican presidential debate, congresswoman michele bachmann took a political swipe at governor rick perry, over a controversial amendment that would have required teenaged girls to get the hpv vaccine. >> she needed to get attention for her candidacy, and she did. the question is, did michele bachmann take atough attack line against rick perry too far. the subject is tha

the united nations and a day before the president is supposed to speak to the u.n. general assembly and this is interesting politics that we will be watching on several fronts. one is that the texas governor is slamming this process that is about to get underway up at the u.n. in which the palestinians may get a vote on statehood. it is a vote that the united states is expected to block. the obama administration is basically going to side with israel on that question, and that's going to be a messy situation for the obama administration, but the fact that this process is underway is really giving some red meat to the republicans. rick perry coming to manhattan and giving remarks. a portion of which we obtained here at cnn. he is expected to say in a few moments we are indignant that certain middle east earn leaders have discarded the principal of direct negotiations between the sovereign nation of israel and the palestinian leadership. he goes on to say this is all part of the obama administration's policy of middle east appeasement to leaders in that region and what rick per i have
